What comes to mind when you hear or see the word NIKE?
I immediately think "Just Do It". I then begin to think of my favorite sneakers its association with the GOAT Michael Jordan and endlessly amazing apparel. If it were. popularity contest NIKE would surely come in first place this isn't just my opinion but the worlds. Another thing that attract many people to NIKE beyond their products is their stance. By this I mean there conscious effort to be connected with people and stand behind progressive movements.
Do you think Nike needs to change any of its branding strategies? If so, why? If not, why not?
No, I think Nike is a champion when it comes to branding the have adopted this whole progressive movement behind athletes which is highly influential to young consumers. The Colin Kaepernick campaign is the best example of this. a 6-million-dollar ad with the line " Believe in something, even if it means losing everything. I find it ironic that there is such a moral self-righteous revolutionary attitude. But most of Nike’s profits can be attributed to slave labor allowing them to manufacture products at ridiculously low cost.
The question becomes is it ethical and synonymous with a brands identity for a major retailer profiting off of unethical practices to own champion progressive movements? I think this question deserves a very concise and complex response. I think it is unjust to profit off of progressive movement if your brand isn't synonymous with the struggle. But then again if they changed labor practices and wages it would disrupt profits causing an uptick in price. Inflated prices may damage the brands reputation as previous items would no longer be attainable by the general market. In my personal opinion I don't agree with brands taking stances as a marketing strategy to entice customers to think they are a conscious brand. Especially when the brands foundation is based on unethical principles and practices.
Now I have expressed my opinion I would like to know what you think. Ultimately can we afford to boycott different brands for the companies or its founders beliefs and practices. Ask yourself this question every-time you look to make a purchase and I'm sure you'll find your consumer options will become rather limited.
